Types of Locks
Upvc door locks are commonly known as euro cylinders, they come in a variety of sizes and finishes, composite doors usually come with euro cylinders too. The picture on the right shows an everyday euro cylinder.
Mortice Locks come in a variety of sizes and finishes, if you happen to have mortice locks on your front or back door they should comply with British standard 3261. British Standard locks will have the bs kitemark and the code bs3261 on the face plate. They are fitted with an armour plate to make it extremely difficult to drill the working parts of the lock out. The keyhole is designed to stop lock picking by being fitted with a part known in the trade as a curtain. Also the bolt is longer and fitted with materials to make it harder to cut through. Always check with your insurance company on what locks they say you should have. If your locks don't comply with what the insurance company says then your policy may be void.
Rim cylinder (yale type locks) should only be used on front doors as extra security as they're
not as secure as mortice locks. Generally they are used with a night-latch so you do not need a key to operate from the inside, so in an emergency situation you can safely exit the door without the need for a key. A lot of multiple occupancy buildings such as student accommodation and vulnerable persons homes are fitted with this facility. Night-latches can also come as British standard which means the bolt or latch locks in place when the door is closed, this means the door cannot be slipped open using a technique similar to the old credit card technique. Again you must check with your insurance company on what locks they want you to comply with.
